CYC Women's Sailing Seminar

Women's Sailing Seminar

Open to all women.

This seminar is designed for beginning sailors or those who would like to refresh their sailing skills.

This year The Corinthian Women celebrates its 27th year of inspiring women to sail.

We begin each morning with a light breakfast followed by classroom instruction. The first day covers what to wear, what to bring and what to leave at home, how to check weather and tides, nautical terminology, how a sailboat works, how the wind works, points of sail and safety. The second day focuses on sailing and seamanship: rules of the road (don’t mess with those big ships), basic navigation, man overboard recovery and knots.

After lunch we go aboard for hands-on learning on the water. Students put into practice what was learned that morning!

Each boat will have an experienced skipper and an instructor to guide you and answer any questions. All of our volunteers are patient teachers/sailors, having once been novices themselves, they are delighted to be sharing their passion of sailing with you.

With interest in sailing and America's Cup swelling now that San Francisco has been chosen for 2013 Cup competition, this seminar is an excellent opportunity to get a taste of the world of sailing in a beautiful and historic setting.

We plan to help you become more knowledgeable and confident as you begin or renew your interest in sailing. We also plan to have a lot of fun. We look forward to seeing you at the seminar!

Words from our Graduates

"Had the best time and will definitely recommend this sailing seminar to other women. The time spent both in class and on the water was perfect. Great for the beginner."
"The price was right and the excitement and acceptance by everyone at CYC was incredible."
"I LOVED the seminar- everyone was so warm and welcoming and made me feel comfortable to be a Beginner."
"I loved hearing the stories of “How I got started and where I ended up” - The instructors & the facilities were TOP OF THE LINE."
"I was so impressed that the guys who taught us were clearly very experienced and competent, but never made anyone feel like they asked a dumb question. Everyone was very humble and knowledgeable."
"I loved finally getting clear on some basics, that I’d always felt embarrassed about not knowing - Port vs. Starboard. Doing that silly little exercise of standing up and turning and being quizzed repeatedly, I finally really got it."
"I thought the balance of classroom/water was good and I loved the hands on experience."
"The actual sailing was my favorite part!!"
"This seminar has been life changing; I’m in love with sailing!!! Thank-you, Thank-you!"
"I want to thank you, and everyone else involved in the seminar, for a truly great experience. It was everything that I expected."

What to Expect

Please plan to arrive at The Corinthian between 8:30 and 9:00am on Saturday morning for registration, orientation, and a light breakfast. The Sunday session will begin at 9am. We will provide light breakfast of muffins and yogurt along with coffee / tea / juice at the start of each day. The sessions will end at approximately 4 pm on both days, however, please plan to stay a little later on Sunday for a celebration.

We will be spending the first half of each day inside in a classroom setting and the second half of each day out on the sail boats. Please bring your own lunch – You’ll be having your lunch with your skipper, instructor and fellow crew.

All students will participate in the process of rigging, sailing, and putting the boats away.

What to Bring/Wear

Please dress comfortably. We strongly recommend layering your clothes so that you may add or eliminate clothing as needed due to the weather. The following is a suggested list of appropriate gear to either wear or bring with you: a ski parka or warm jacket, deck shoes or athletic shoes with a white or light-colored sole, foul weather gear, fleece, gloves, and a life jacket.

Ski clothes are often a good option to bring if you don’t have sailing gear. Whatever you choose, avoid bulky or heavy clothing. Also, please avoid cotton and denim. Both of these types of cloth absorb water, and you do not want to be cold and wet while sailing. Plenty of sunscreen, a pair of sunglasses, and a hat are also recommended for your comfort. Please note that everyone must wear a life jacket for the portion of instruction which is out on the water. If you plan to become an avid sailor, a great place to find your life jacket or PFD (Personal Flotation Device) is at West Marine in Sausalito. Otherwise, we can provide you with a life jacket.

Women’s Sailing Seminar hats, T-shirt and course book are part of the package and will be given to you on Saturday morning.

The Corinthian Store will be open during the lunch break.

Parking

There are plenty of parking lots in Tiburon. The least expensive is the Angel Island Parking lot on Tiburon Blvd. just past the library on the left as you are driving into town. There is also a parking lot right across the street from The Corinthian. The Corinthian is located at 43 Main Street, which is a right turn off of Tiburon Blvd. onto Main Street, past Sam’s Anchor Café in the large white clubhouse through the small private parking lot.
