Commodore’s Column

by Cliff Donoho

The cruise to the BVI seemed to be a great success, and my birthday party there was beyond my expectations. My thanks to all those that participated and helped me celebrate. The trip culminated with Foxy, the owner of the world famous bar and party place on Jost Van Dyke, accepting our invitation to dinner at CYC on Sunday the 18th of April. We made him an honorary member of the Club.

Club Staff Member of the Year:
I am taking the liberty of proclaiming Ingo Schreiber, our Club manager, the staff member of the year. He has done things for our Club which many members are only vaguely aware of, if at all. I personally noticed that during the first two or three years after he came to the Club that many of our operating costs declined significantly without a commensurate reduction in services or staff. He regularly goes beyond the call of duty by working extra hours, coming in on his days off, and doing double or triple duty when other staff are on vacation, sick, or otherwise unable to come to work. He is not a desk chair manager. He is capable of performing almost every task performed by Club staff, and does so whenever necessary. Most of us have seen him in foul weather gear running the shore boats doing Club SAR (search and rescue), and performing dock steward duties on busy weekends. What you don't see are the phone calls, letters, and meetings with neighboring property owners, and communications and meetings with officials from the various county, town, city, and other government entities and authorities we need to deal with in the ongoing operation of our Club. His work day includes many evenings meeting with Club committees and the Board of Directors, providing guidance to those of us that make the rules and set policy during our short tenure as volunteers. He is continuously working to make things better at the Club for all of us.

OPENING DAY:
Opening day weekend this year was one of the best ever. The weather was perfect, decorations were great, fantastic turnout by Club members and guests, high level Coast Guard participation (the Admiral), and good music all contributed to an all star good time. All thanks to Staff Commodore Diana Fischer, Chairperson and organizer of the event. We also thank, in memory, Charlie White, who started this event for the Club 41 years ago.

CORINTHIAN SAILORS:
We have some outstanding sailors in the Club, and some of them are representing us again this year competing in the Pacific Cup race to Hawaii. Michael Moradzadeh, sailing his yacht Cayenne for the 3rd time in this race, with Club members Rich Lauman, David Johnson, and Rear Commodore John Warren as crew, will be starting the race on June 29th. Cayenne came in 3rd in class in 2000, due to some gear failure, after being in first place a couple of days from the finish. You can follow their progress on www.pacificcup.org. Let's all cheer them on, as a win for Cayenne is a win for CYC.
