"Saving Sailing" Author Nicholas Hayes

Participation in sailing is declining in America, down 70% since 1979 on a per-capita basis. If you love to sail, you will be alarmed at this sad trend. Saving Sailing, which quickly became an Amazon best-seller, is a provocative argument and action plan for the revival of sailing in America.

In his presentation, author Nick Hayes, who has been an avid sailor for 30 years, shared his experiences while researching and writing the book. He shared the facts, dispelled some myths about sailing, read an excerpt, and offered clear and practical suggestions for newcomers to try sailing, sailors to make time for it, and for sailing organizations to increase participation. Nick is an inspirational speaker, encouraging sailors to reflect on sailing in the bigger picture, and giving effective suggestions for expanding participation in our beloved activity.

Hayes' talks are lively, fun and in demand: in the last year, thousands have attended his programs in Newport, Paris, Chicago, Miami, and Annapolis to organizations like Sail America, US Sailing and the ISAF, and at sailing clubs all over the U.S. Nick contributes significant time to community work and to sailing. His sailing resume boasts thousands of course races and thousands of offshore miles in the Chicago-Mackinac, Queen’s Cup, Hook, and Trans-Superior races, winning many. Most important to Hayes: he and every member of his young family race and cruise together as often as possible.
